Red purse burns your money
Not so long ago, I went to the biggest shopping mall in Japan called AEON Laketown with a friend. The area consists of two huge mall buildings and a factory outlet.
My friend, Pipi, is a Chinese girl. She is my senpai in graduate school but a year old younger than me.
We were inside Coach and I was looking at the women purses. Recently, I want to buy a new purse, simple and small, more like a card case but I can put some bills and coins. Coach has a purse with design that I want —but just I don’t like Coach logo on it. I personally feel it looks dasai. My friend thinks the same. She said Coach products are dasai — also Michael Kors.
But if you give me I will accept happily, of course!
I forgot what was the flow of my conversation with Pipi but then she said, “It’s not good to have red purse or wallet.”
“Nande?”
“It’s fengshui. It is believed when you use a red purse, you will spend more money, so it is not good. It is recommended to use black or brown purses or wallets because they symbolize anteisei.”
My current wallet is brown and my economic situation is kind of stable. Stable… not increasing, no sign of getting rich soon. 🥹
I’m kind of shocked since we all know red is Chinese favorite color. Yes, except for purses. Well, everyday you discover something brand new.
So I Googled about this. The explanation is as following:
Red is the color of fire 🔥 in Chinese philosophy. Therefore, it sets fire to wealth. Unless you want to burn your money, it is advisable to not using red wallets or purses.
I don’t believe this 100% since I know whatever color is my wallet I will waste my money on something I don’t need. However, I won’t buy red purse anyway and it’s nice to know about this philosophy.
dasai (ダサい) = uncool, unfashionable
